New course launched - Cancer Care for Children and Young People
4 November, 2005
Nurse Learning has launched its fifth, free online course for nurses and carers on the CancerNursing.org site. 'Cancer Care for Children and Young People', has been developed by the Paediatric Oncology Nurse Education (PONE) group of the Royal College of Nursing in the United Kingdom.
Helen Langton, Chair of the PONE group and editor of the course, comments, "We were very keen to develop a course that offered a broad introduction to the subject of cancer in children and young people, and to make it as accessible as possible. As survival rates increase, many more nurses are coming into contact with childhood cancer survivors. Nevertheless, many nurses face real problems in undertaking formal face-to-face education about childhood cancer and the CancerNursing.org website gave us the opportunity to meet their development needs in an extremely attractive format. We really hope that nurses find the course useful. Understanding the basic concepts of cancer in this age group will, we believe, help nurses in providing care."
As with all CancerNursing.org courses, a 'Record of Achievement' is available to learners that complete all of the online self-assessment tests within the course, and this Record can be kept in a personal development learning portfolio.
Prior to launch the course has been reviewed by the following childhood cancer experts:
Dr. Faith Gibson, Lecturer in Children's Nursing Research at Great Ormond Street Hospital NHS Trust, London, United Kingdom.
Professor Barbara Love, School of Nursing, McMaster University, Ontario, Canada.
Louise Soanes, Senior Sister, Children's Cancer Unit, Royal Marsden Hospital, Surrey, United Kingdom.
CancerNursing.org volunteer, Stuart Sutherland, adds, "We are absolutely delighted to have worked with the PONE group on this course. Like our recently launched 'Introduction to Palliative Care Nursing' course, we feel that this new course will provide nurses and carers with a broad introduction to a key area of cancer care. We know from the response to the palliative care course that there is a broad demand internationally for this sort of introductory course and we really hope to have provided that for nurses and carers concerned with cancer care for children and young people."

Bob, comments, "I was keen to develop the palliative care course because I have been excited by the opportunities that the CancerNursing.org site offers nurses in terms of learning at a time and pace that suits them. I hope that the Introduction to Palliative Care Nursing course is as well-received as the previous CancerNursing.org courses have been, and that nurses can utilise it to develop their palliative care skills."
A 'Record of Achievement' is available to learners that complete all of the online self-assessment tests, and this Record can be kept in a personal development learning portfolio.

Ed was a pleasure to work with from the moment he contacted us, and we are tremendously proud to have had the opportunity to collaborate with him on this course."

Commenting on today's launch, CancerNursing.org's Chief Nursing Officer, Mark Irving, says; "We are often asked how nurses can help spread the word about the CancerNursing.org site. We feel that the online store will do this in two ways. Firstly, wearing one of the t-shirts or drinking from one of the mugs will raise our profile.
Secondly, for each item purchased from the store, CancerNursing.org receives a small donation, which we will use to fund new developments."
Hosted by CafePress, the online store offers secure payments and delivery across the globe.
The CancerNursing.org online shop can be visited at http://www.CafePress.com/cancernursing
